3 weeks off..ugh!

Doc says I have to take 3 weeks off... I have an inflamed tensor fasciae latae... see picture to left.

I have a physical therapy consult on Friday. Maybe it will be a quicker recovery with some aggressive PT.

I was scheduled to do the Turkey Trot 5K on the 16th and the Turkey Chase 10K on Thanksgiving morning, I guess we will have to see what the PT says.

Post MCM

Well, its’ been awhile since I updated the blog and I do apologize. The last entry talked about that fact I think I tweaked my knee during my daughters field hockey practice. I am really not sure what is wrong. I sure found out that it is something though during the marathon.
Hurricane Sandy stayed away long enough to get the entire race and post race activities in before any rain and most of the wind came. The Marine Corps always puts on a great event. It is super well organized and I never have a complaint about it. As for my performance…I was not going to get my sub 4 hours with the way my knee was feeling, I knew that going in, but I was going to give it my best shot.
I was doing great at the start I found the 4 hour Clif Bar Race pace guy and stuck with him for the first  three or four miles. I got out ahead of him at mile five and was settling into a nice pace of 8:25/mi.  It was between mile seven and eight that disaster struck.  I heard and felt a pop in my left hip and then I lost all power in my left leg on a little uphill just after mile 7 mile marker. The best way to describe the pain was as if someone and punched me. Except if felt that way every time I pushed off and tried to use that leg for power. There are not a lot of hills on the Marine Corps Marathon course, but between 7 and 8 happens to be one of them. So I had nothing going up into Georgetown.
Needless to say, I walked a lot through Georgetown (miles 8 and 9) and spent most of the race just trying to run till I couldn’t take the pain anymore. There goes the 4hr pace guy blowing right by me…Really, really. I can tough this out. I have trained for months and I am in great shape. Suck it up, Sailor….Just three week prior I ran 20 miles in under 2:50 or 8:30/mi pace…tough it out.  Hell, I was supposed to be running this for my Brother-in-law GR who is battling cancer. Cancer sucks! This is nothing compared to what GR is going through…just keep going.
Mile 11 to 12 I run the entire mile at a 7:44 pace, this isn’t so bad…12 and 13 running at 9:00/mile pace. Mile 14 Hanes Point and Mile 15 heading toward Lincoln Memorial it was a lot of walking.  Mile 16 I meet and see Bobbi and I gut it up and run the next two at 9:30 pace. Now on Mall I am running till I cry then walking till the pain goes away and then I go again. I see Bobbi again at mile 20…If I do not  seen her there I might of quit. Now I’m at a 10:30 pace. At least I’m moving…

I run across the 14th Street bridge in 9:00, but  slow down again in Crystal City 11:00+/mi and speed up to a nice 8:30/mi pace at mile 24 mile when I see the 4:30 pace girl and try to stay with her till the end.  I couldn’t and finished with 4:35:20…10:30/mi…Ouch!

Injuries happen I understand that. I know that I was in position for a 3:50 marathon. I know that but this one will hurt for a long time. I still have three more races to do this year…Sunday I will do the Ripley 5K with Cori, the 16th I will do my 4th Joint Base Ft Myer Henderson Hall Turkey Trot 5K , and on Thanksgiving will be my 4th Camp Letts Turkey Chase 10K.  I plan to take each of them easy and just do them to finish. I also have appointment to have my hip/knee looked at so maybe I can get an answer on what it is….
I think my marathon days are over. I don’t have any planned for next year and I will spend most the time training with Bobbi. She plans to do a 70.3 Triathlon next year and I will train as much as I can with her. I might even attempt a Sprint Tri… Stay tuned…

Ugh!

UGH!!!!!!!

Only two weeks to go before the MCM. One problem., though! I think I tweaked my left knee at Field Hockey practice on Tuesday. So now what to do.

I would start scaling back my miles anyhow...
Maybe a massage?

The pain seems to be on the outside of my left knee.

I just want to be able to do my best and not have a annoying injury to slow me down... after six months of training

I'll keep you up to date!

20 Miler

Today, I ran a 20 Miler.... and I was very happy with the results.

I had slight stomach cramp at mile 3 but it went away pretty quick. Also got a right leg calf cramp at mile 8 that went away once I was off the dirt road and back on the pavement at mile 10.

The only real set back was that my bag of extra water bottles and food was taken/stolen from the side of the road, where Bobbi (it was awesome that she came out this morning with me) had dropped them off.
So at mile 11 came and went and I had drank all my G2 and ate most of my Bonk Bar and Sport Beans...there was nothing there to replace them with.

Luckily Bobbi drove by and handed me another G2 to refill with...By mile 13 I was back at the 8:30 pace and kept it till the end.

It started off rather cool (44F) when I started but rose quickly to mid 50's by the end...If I can keep that pace for the 26.2 I should be well under 4 hours and I will be very happy.

Overall, great prep for the MCM in 20 days... now I'll slip my Mojo compression socks on and chill out for the rest of the day...

I run for GR!

Mind Games

Great article with a great quote:

Four weeks to go...

So it's been awhile.

Las race was the the Navy-Air Force Half Marathon and it went fine. I got a slight cramp in my hip about the 9 mile point but pushed thru and finished just about where I wanted to. The race itself was very well organized and it was pretty easy course. Running it in PR of 1:49:35 or 7:55/mi.

Right after the race I had to get a plane and travel to Colorado Springs, CO.  I plan to run a couple time while on the trip but only managed to run twice. Both time at over 5000ft and both times just over 4 miles at 8:30/pace. Running at altitude is not the easiest thing to do. I feel as though I have no pop, nothing extra, so I just worked on maintaining a study pace.

Since I've been back I have been a little slack. Demands at work got a little crazy and I will have to work through those for the next four weeks.

Just four weeks until the MCM. I signed up for the Cliff Bar Pace Team (http://www.clifbar.com/play/pace_team/), still hoping to break the 4 hour mark.

As all my races are for the year...this one will be for GR!

Devil Dog 7K

My goal for the Devil Dog 7K ( It acually endded up being 7.22K or 4.49 miles)  this morning was maintaining a pace...I was shooting for 7:30 min/mi.

Mile one split mostly flat 7:23 min/mi. Mile two all downhill to Iwo Jima Memorial 7:03 min/mi. Around the memorial and start up the hill for mile 3 and a 7:56 min/mi pace. Mile four another 100 feet of ascent and a 7:53 min/mi pace, the last half mile was a flat 7:25/mi.

For a 33:54 overall time and a 7:33 min/mi...Top 20 finish with the winner running a 28:55 or 6:26 min /mi.

Next up Navy Half Marathon on Sunday...

Monday, September 10, 2012

Two quality runs...

First came Sunday...8 miles at a 8 min/mi pace...Overall I did well. I ran the first 3 with ave pace of  8:04, 8:05 and 7:58... next three 8:09, 8:04 and 8:48 (between 5 and 6 I walked to drink), and the last two and a half  I ran 8:10 and a 7:38... I really tried to keep a steady pace and it will be my goal to do the same next week at the Navy Half Marathon

Today was just a easy 5 miler...although it include a hill and I didn't get much sleep before hand...I still managed a 8:48 pace...I'm ok with that!

Tomorrow an easy 6 then the Devil Dog 7K on Wednesday....

Back to the grind...

I ran yesterday for the first time since the A10. It was a little slow 8:35/mi but it was good to get out there... I ran with Bobbi this morning and I plan to do a longer run 8 or more miles tomorrow.

This week I have the Henderson Hall Ooh Rah Run series Devil Dog 7K on Wed (Devil Dog) and then Navy-Air Force Half Marathon next Sunday (NAFHM).

Just seven weeks until the Marine Corps Marathon.....

A10 in the monsoon

Well it was very wet race, but it was a PR for the A10.
1:25:40 or 8:34/mi
Overall: 996 of 3864
Age Group (M45-49): 117 of 350

I had a nice start and a great pace for the first three miles: 7:43, 7:42, and 7:42. Leaving the stadium and heading to Downtown Annapolis (DTA). This was awesome considered we ran thru the heaviest rain I have every ran thru.

Mile four takes you up to Navy Academy bridge and 5 miles takes you up Ritche Hwy...not fun and my time slowed with a 8:11 and 8:44...I picked up the pace in mile 6 with a 7:59.

Then comes my cramp...hit hit me hard in the right calf on mile 7, while I ways heading back down hill, still ran 8:18.

Mile 8 I ran thru the cramp the best I could, walked thru a water stop and got ready for the Bridge with a 9:45. Mile 9 has the bridge and knocked out a 9:14...

And finished the last mile back to Navy and Marine Corps Memorial Stadium with 8:24 pace....

I was happy with the race and my time...I was awesome to to have Bobbi standing in the rain cheering me in on at a couple spot along the way and at the finish...Thanks, babe.

Now I get 11 days off before I run again...Ireland here we come...
GO NAVY, Beat Notre Dame!

Old v. New

Here is the elevation for the new course of the A10 on Sunday....
The old course is the dotted line. I'll be cussing mile 4.5 to 6.5 but it is just 75 more feet elevation...
I got this...

I run 4 GR!

A10 is next week?

Just one week to go before the Annapolis 10 Mile Run.

They have changed the course so my previous PR will not be applicable. I'm not sure if it will be a easier or harder course...

My fastest 10 Miler was earlier this year in the the Cherry Pit 10 Miler, when at ran a fast 1:17:35 in South County. Yeah, that's like a 7:47/mi....

I have't been able to do a lot of speed work lately so we will see what happens next week...by previous best on the A10, although a different route, was 1:28:27...I should be able to drop that! This week just has me doing a couple short runs around Ft. Myer/Henderson Hall.

Also, after finding out some shocking news that my brother-in-law (GR) is fighting cancer, I have decide to dedicate the remaining of my races to him... I will be wearing a LIVESTRONG  bracelet for the rest of the season and I will be posting his progress as well as mine the rest of the way on here...

Ben Moore Half Marathon

So this morning was the Ben Moore Memorial Half Marathon. The website described the race like this....

"Ben trained hundreds of runners to successfully complete their first marathon. Those of us who benefited from Ben's inspiration and guidance want you to join us in a memorial run in his honor, on some of the same routes Ben led us on for 20 years.  Proceeds from the race will go to the Anne Arundel County Auxiliary Police who Ben was a part of for many years, Chesapeake Hospice House who provided compassion and support for Ben and his wife, Betty; the and Rude Ranch Animal Rescue. A new beneficiary this year will be the METAvivor organization for Stage 4 Breast Cancer awareness." (http://www.active.com/running/annapolis-md/ben-moore-memorial-half-marathon-and-10k-2012)

For this run, I did my first pre-race run...I went out two hours prior to start time and ran about 1.5 miles, not hard just a jog. This really helped my lingering bathroom problem. I went before we left the house and didn't have to go during the race. I also didn't eat  anything heavy after 3 pm the day before. I think the combination might be the way to go in the future.

I was using this race as part of training...I was scheduled to run 12 miles today so this fit. It was not the easiest route...
Most of the course weaved in and out of some neighborhoods north of the Riva, MD area. I never could get into a rhythm...so I slugged along....

Official Results:

"There were 18 finishers in the Male 40 to 49 age group and
175 finishers in the race. Your overall finish place was 44 and your age group finish place was 4.  Your time of 1:54:32.10 gave you a  8:44 pace per mile."

Get up that Hill

I ran Fort Whipple hill twice this morning. It is a nice long grade of a almost 150 feet acent over a half mile of distance.

Also ran over 2 miles before doing the hill twice... I had a good steady pace up the hill both times. The humidity this morning was really bad but I did hydrate before hand andhad no issues with the heat or the recent bathroon issues.

I have a short run tomorrow before I run the Ben Moore Memorial Half Marthaton on Saturday morning.

Do Do

I hate to start this blog out today with this...but I need help.
I can't figure out why I can't run more than 5 or 6 mile before I have to pooh.
I was have a good run this more and was trying to go at a good pace...

I don't know if it is when I eat or when I get up or what Id rink or eat the night before.

I really thought it was just my mind playing tricks on me. Trying anyway to get me to quit.
Below is a really good article by the Pre-dawn Runner on the mental prperation of running.

But, I just think I don't know what I am doing..I really need some help on this one.

Running in the Rain

Despite the rain...
I did get my 14 miles in today....
I don't mind running in the rain. You stay cool...
Bobbi the last 2.25 with me...I had a under 8min/mi pace going most of the way, so I was really happy with the wet run

Timed out

I didn't start my Garmin and I put the Cyclemeter on mute as I ran a 4.25 miles in 30:15 or 7:07/mi. I just wanted to see if I could run at pace without watching the clock.

I did most of the hill (Ft Whipple Hill) and it was very warm....but I am thrilled with the run.

Adjustments....

Rolling Hills?
Friday was a rest day. However, I ended up spending 6 hours in the car traveling to Ohio.
I did run on Saturday. I was scheduled to run 12 miles but only ran 10 miles, an out and back route, on a rural road (State Route 43 between Amsterdam and Richmond for those back home in Ohio). It was very hilly and starting at 1289 feet above sea level, I had over 400 feet of total ascent to deal with. My mother-in-law thought I was “nuts to run on that road.”

In that area there have always been coal trucks and heavy traffic. But now with the surge of the Marcellus Gas and Oil (Better known as the Fracking style of oil and gas exploration) business in eastern Ohio, there are some very large heavy equipment trucks that run on the country roads. I am ok with cars and trucks and running around them but I was cautious and wore my brightest running shirt, a very orange shirt from RUSeen.com. The cows that I passed by mooed loudly at me as I ran. Not sure if they approved of my shirt or were agreeing with my mother-in-law that I was “nuts.” I may be nuts but I will never be out of shape again.

It was a hard run from the stand point that I never got into rhythm with the hills and turns to contend with, but it was good to get out there on a muggy Saturday morning.
Saturday Night was Bobbi’s 25th HS reunion. Although, Bobbi and I went to the same HS, I graduated two years ahead of her. So, I knew some, but most I didn’t. The best part of the evening was listening to the numerous compliments Bobbi got for looking so great. It is really cool to be married to an athletic wife…
Sunday, was a biking day. We took the bike with us and the plan was to bike early Sunday. Well, Sunday morning came quick since we didn’t go to bed till 1am the night before. So, at 0700, I hit the road. Some more of the rural Eastern Ohio roads (this time from Amsterdam to Knoxville SR 43, 152 to 213 and back)
It wasn’t a very fast bike. I only averaged 16 mph. It was on the same rolling hills that I ran on the day before, except I did 26.75 miles. I also had 2029 feet of accent over the course and I hit a top speed of 33 mph. It was hard a bike after and hard run, but I really felt good and had great chocolate chip waffle breakfast afterward. That was good because, according to Cyclemeter App, I burnt 1400 calories on the bike…and there was bacon…yea, bacon.

Then we left the girls behind in Ohio to spend a week with Bobbi’s mom and then a week with my parents…Another 6 hour trip in the car home. We stopped a couple places on the way back…Goshen, WV and Hancock, MD. We decided two things about Hancock. One, we need to look into the Western Maryland Rail Trail for future biking adventures. And secondly, the Blue Goose Fruit market would even a better stop later in the season when all the apples orchards were producing.
So, Monday morning came pretty quick. My schedule had me running an easy 5 miles. I didn’t check that before I ran and ended up running a very quick 6.2 miles. It was another run were I never looked at my time or splits when I was running and I seemed to do better pace wise…I’m starting to think there might be something to that. I was ok with that extra 1.2 knowing that tomorrows run would not happen do to my work schedule. I feel pretty good with the adjustments I made on a busy weekend.

Hill Workout

110 days till the MCM
Today was a 6 mile hill workout.

I ran Fort Whipple Hill (#2 on the topographical map to the right) twice and got my pace up to7:30/mi the second time up.

Total distance 5.8 miles...ab workout tonight...update to follow.

111 days until the MCM

Today started my training for the 2012 Marine Corps Marathon in October.
I was scheduled to run an easy 6 miles....
I ran my 6 but it didn't end up being easy...I didn't start my Garmin but I did happen to hit the start button on my Cyclemeter app on the iPhone.
Last week I didn't run at all. We were on vacation in Chincoteague, VA. I biked a little to and from the beach and spent a ton of time in the water body surfing and boogie boarding.

So how does that relate to this morning... I don't know but I ran that 6 miles at a 7:05/mi pace...I twas raining...I ran some hills...even some steps....
I seem to run better when I don't pay attention the the time or my watch....good way to start my journey toward the MCM.

PR- - - Ooh Rah!

I set a Personal Record (PR) in the 5K this morning. 20:50 or 6:43/mi while running in the Chesty Puller 5K as part of the Ooh Rah Run Series at Henderson Hall. Maybe it was the appearance of Chesty himself that helped.

I didn't go out very fast. I knew that there is a hill to contend with after the turn around point. I tried to maintain a steady pace until the 2.5 mile point then I pushed to get home under 21 minutes (my previous best on this course was 21:08). The winner finished in 17:04 and was probably 19 years old. I knew I wasn’t going to catch him. And I wasn’t able to catch the top female runner either, she finished 50 yards in front of me and had a really good kick up the hill…
No age group awards the only awards were for the first and second place male and female. However, I finished 14th overall.

I was really surprised that there were nearly 100 people in the 5K Fun Run. It really was fun…

Now, I get to spin down from training for a couple weeks and start the Marathon Training schedule on 9 July.

P.S. Trying out my new Mojo compression calf sleeves for post race cramps…I’ll let you know how it goes

My Muse

Today’s post will be about my muse. My wife completed her first Olympic Distance Triathlon this past weekend. The Philly Tri (1.5K swim, 40K bike and 10K run).
The Olympic Distance is amazing…Nearly a mile long swim, and then 24.8 miles thru the hilly sections of Philly, and then a 6.2 mile run…
She trained hard for the Olympic distance…her swim time was awesome clearly her best leg of the race. Her bike was really good..her first time on the hilly and challenging course that has 50 technical turns…the run then just becomes a slug fest…she fought it off and finished with a smile!
Her smiley face race jersey was the talk of the event…You spot her a mile away in it…and few even came up to the girls and I and noted they she had the best jersey and they were following her  and cheering her on because of it.
She really does inspire me. It was kind of a weird way to spend our 23rd wedding anniversary, but I was way awesome to see my muse, complete something she has worked so hard for the last 6 mos.

P.S. Don’t stay the Crown Plaza Philadelphia West, it sucks!

Suprise..suprise

So, I'm off my training cycle right now... I have the Chesty Puller 5K at Henderson Hall next week. But I have not been training for it. Or realy training at all...So I figured I'd run the course this morning. Without really thinking or pushing I ran 7:11/mi. I did run the course backwards...I ran up Fort Whipple Hill. While the 5K course will have me running down it...maybe I can set a PR on this course which is a 21:08.. I have a couple more runs to get in before then...another suprise next week would be nice.

If you think the suit fits….tailor it.

If you think the suit fits….tailor it.
It is a rarity that you can go into a clothing store put on an outfit and it fit perfectly.  That is why for tailors will always be around. I guess you can comprise and convince yourself that it fits, even though it’s a little short there a little tug there…
I have found the same goes for training plans. Although, there are multitudes of training plans (http://www.halhigdon.com/, http://www.jeffgalloway.com/training/marathon.html and http://www.waddle-on.com/), apps (http://mashable.com/2010/02/23/iphone-apps-runners/), and schedules…none of them fit me exactly. So I tailor them. Most have a day off that doesn’t fit my schedule or have a long run when I’m doing something else.
It is to ok make it your own plan. Use the best of those plans to custom fit it to you. I don’t run on Fridays…I like to do my long runs…Every now and then I miss a workout…life happens. It might be a different story if I was a pro, relying on the income. But since my running and cycling and soon to be core body workouts are for me to maintain a healthier body, I’m not as worried about.
Couple rules I use for both running and biking.
1)      If you training for a race make sure that by the time you run it your total distance run in a week equals twice the distance you are racing at (i.e. 10K race you should be running at least 12 miles is a week for Marathon you should be able to get to 50 miles).
2)      Try to mix it up. Short, long , that have hills, that have you do some sprinting, and that simulate the race pace .
3)      But if all else fails just remember, at least you are out there. "If you run, you are a runner. It doesn't matter how fast or how far. It doesn't matter if today is your first day or if you've been running for twenty years. There is no test to pass, no license to earn, no membership card to get. You just run." John "the Penguin" Bingham
